Transforming School Reading Cultures

The Transforming School Reading Cultures programme consists of 5 research-based professional development sessions aimed at primary English/Reading Leads. The sessions will take you through pedagogical theory and best practise surrounding reading for pleasure. They will provide opportunities to gain knowledge of the subject alongside the confidence to manage, drive and sustain meaningful change in your own school.

The five sessions are free of charge, but to be eligible, schools need to have robust phonics approach embedded (with strong screener outcomes) and must commit to attending all of the sessions.

Literacy Specialist Drop-In Clinics

An informal opportunity for you to meet one of our team online and ask questions about phonics/early reading. These are not structured delivery sessions.

The call will be live from 15:00 for the first 30 minutes which will be an opportunity for informal advice and discussions with one of the Cornerstone literacy specialists. The main input for the event will begin at 15:30.

The transition from key stage 1 to key stage 2 can often be challenging for learners – including in the realm of reading. Finding texts which meet both their interests and challenge point isn’t a simple task. In this network session we’ll discuss strategies we use to make sure every reader’s journey is a fulfilling one and one which helps them to move forward meaningfully.

This network meeting is a celebration of storytelling: offering educators the chance to learn how to host impactful author visits that captivate and inspire our learners. Discuss approaches to creating memorable experiences that not only encourage a love for reading but also enhance students’ literary understanding and creativity.

Join this network session where we delve into the nuances of supporting students with diverse speech and language requirements. This session is an opportunity for educators to exchange best practices, innovative approaches, and resources that facilitate phonics instruction for learners facing speech and language challenges. Explore the art of oracy with our ‘Speaking Volumes: Infusing Oracy into the Curriculum’ network session. This time, we’ll be seeking to integrate oracy skills into our teaching practices across the curriculum to develop this crucial life skill with our children. Engage with fellow professionals to share insights, techniques, and activities that foster students’ speaking abilities, ensuring they can express themselves confidently and effectively across all areas of the curriculum.

This important relationship can often be challenging to maintain, but makes a significant difference to children’s learning. Come together with colleagues to consider our readiness for the phonics screening check. In this session, we’ll run through some ‘top tips’ in the runup to the screener and explore key practices to reinforce as we approach the assessment date. Let’s collaborate with our diverse insights and experience to set up every learner for success in these final weeks.

Embark on a literary journey with ‘Write On: Crafting Excellence in Every Word’, a network session tailored for teachers who are passionate about nurturing exceptional writing skills. This session is a collaborative space to share and discover creative strategies, tools, and practices that inspire students to excel in writing, enabling them to articulate their thoughts with clarity and creativity in every word.

Supporting Early Language Development is a CPD programme developed by a group of English Hubs with support from Speech and Language UK.

The programme has been developed as part of a project to create a more consistent medium level support (MLS) offer across the English Hub network which will streamline workload for hubs and create more equal access to CPD on early language nationally for schools accessing support from hubs.The term ‘early language’ can be used to cover a number of different ages and stages from birth onwards.

The programme will be exclusively available via English Hubs.The five sessions are free of charge, but to be eligible, schools need to have a YR/KS1 provision and must commit to attending all of the sessions.

The programme will be exclusively available via English Hubs.

Reading Ambition for All Programme

The Reading Ambition for All programme consists of 5 research-based professional development modules aimed at improving reading outcomes for children, including those with SEND.

Programme Aims:

• Improve outcomes for children needing additional reading support.
• Ensure quality-first teaching based on the latest research.
• Utilize evidence-based strategies to enhance reading skills.
• Promote adaptive teaching for children with SEND in mainstream settings.

Module Content:

1. Guiding Principles: Teaching SEND in mainstream schools, including EEF guidance and understanding common SEND misconceptions.
2. Understanding Needs: Ensuring access to learning, addressing barriers, and using assessments to support pupils.
3. Adaptive Teaching: Implementing adaptive teaching and appropriate classroom adaptations.
4. Leading Reading: High expectations for every child, using assessments to create effective support.
5. Supporting Complex SEND: Adapting teaching for children with complex SEND, including multi-sensory approaches and expert support.

This special event inspired by the ‘Fluency Project’ programme will give you the chance to explore the principles and research behind fluency, practical strategies for the classroom and how the formal Fluency Project intervention may be able to support your children to achieve in their reading.

Ensure your teaching & leading of this phonics programme is as good as it can be by attending our three reading leader days with Ruth Miskin Training. These days will focus on one-to-one tutoring, getting to grips with graphemes and focusing on fluency respectively. We recommend attending all three days.
